Former students give back to families in need
Former students from a United Methodist high school that sits across the road from Africa University in Zimbabwe have come together to assist poor communities.
The Class of 81 Charitable Foundation was launched in January and is made up of nine Hartzell High School students who completed their studies in 1981.
The school, which has strong roots in The United Methodist Church, is named after Joseph Crane Hartzell, an American missionary and bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church assigned to Africa.
Church member’s passion for recycling pays off
Through a recycling buyback initiative, Thozeka Letuka provides opportunities to clean up the environment and provide income and meaningful employment to members of her local community in Durban. Her company, Big Start Recycling and Buy Centre, helps transform discarded items into valuable resources.

Churchgoers in Zimbabwe help neighbors after cyclone
Ricocheting across the Indian Ocean for five weeks earlier this year, Cyclone Freddy wreaked havoc on Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe, killing more than 1,400 people. Most of the deaths were in southern Malawi as the weather system brought devastating rains, floods and mudslides.
Radio network transforms to reach more people
At an inaugural meeting April 21-22, forum delegates unanimously elected the Rev. Lloyd T. Nyarota of the Zimbabwe East Conference as the caucus’ general coordinator. Regional coordinators, secretaries and advisers were also elected.
